And finally, as we wait for the final whistle at Anfield, here’s how second and third got on. Not a classic.

FULL-TIME: Brentford 1-1 Everton

Everton fight back to extend their unbeaten run in the league to seven. David Moyes is doing his thing.

FULL-TIME: Manchester United 3-2 Ipswich

Ten-man United have got the three points, working their way there with three set-piece goals.

FULL-TIME: Tottenham 0-1 Manchester City

Tottenham’s brief resurgence – back-to-back wins in the league – is brought to a halt.

DISALLOWED GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Manchester City

Nevermind, no goal. Erling Haaland’s one-two with Phil Foden in the build-up sees the ball adjudged to have come off the striker’s arm. VAR took it’s time there before denying Haaland his 21st league goal of the season.

Brentford 1-1 Everton: It’s a top diving header from Jake O’Brien at the far post that brings Everton back, with thanks required to Vitalii Mykolenko, crossing in from the left. O’Brien has his first goal for the club.

Tottenham 0-1 Manchester City: We’re into the final 10 minutes of normal time, with Ange having already made plenty of changes. Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Djed Spence are all on, having begun on the bench. A league double over the champions isn’t looking all that on.

I am being bombarded with emails from Manchester United fans, with victory here unlikely to bring that much joy. Here’s Fiona Ruddy:

I am a lifelong Manchester United fan, currently on a flight to Hawaii. I can confirm everyone on this plane is happy except for me. Not even the future of paradise can remove the misery and malaise of this truly bad team from my cursed bones.

Our focus so far this evening has been at Old Trafford, due to the obvious mayhem. Forest and Arsenal’s clash remains goalless, while Liverpool are in the lead against Newcastle. It’s so over, isn’t it?

GOAL! Manchester United 3-2 Ipswich (Maguire 47)

It’s yet another set-piece that does it for Manchester United! Bruno Fernandes is the creator once again, with Harry Maguire advancing into the mosh pit, heading the ball into the ground and past Palmer in the net.

Michael Coad writes in, responding to John in New York (scroll down):

I live in the States, too, support Man United and second the opinion of one of your writers. I’d love it if United got relegated. The Glazers have been terrible owners. Whilst they have spent plenty of money most has been wasted. And new minority owner Ratcliffe doesn’t look like an improvement. I’ve been supporting United since 1963. This is as low as it’s been.

GOAL! Brentford 1-0 Everton (Wissa 45+4)

A blow for Everton just before the break. A long throw from the right causes mayhem in the area, with Bryan Mbeumo heading from close range on to the crossbar. The ball plops up into the air … and Yoane Wissa flings himself for the rebound header, both the ball and forward landing in the net.

GOAL! Manchester United 2-2 Ipswich (Philogene 45+2)

This game is getting a bit ridiculous. A bizarre first-half ends with a bizarre goal as Jaden Philogene cuts in from the right and whips in a cross that beats everyone and finds the far corner. Andre Onana was anticipating a touch from Liam Delap that never came.

RED CARD! Patrick Dorgu sent off for Manchester United

Manchester United 2-1 Ipswich: Patrick Dorgu, who helped Ipswich open the scoring, has been shown a red just before half-time after VAR is called into action. He goes far too high with his studs on poor ol’ Omari Hutchinson’s shin. It was close to the halfway line and wildly unnecessary.

As we approach half-time, I’m just catching up on all your emails. Kári Tulinius also weighs in on United.

When I lived in the US, I got to know people who were fans of teams who were never good, the Kansas City Royals, Washington Wizards, any team from Cincinnati. It seemed like a miserable experience. Because major American sports teams aren’t relegated, there’s not even the excitement of potential escape, it’s just a purgatory of suck. With the economic stratification of the premier league, it feels like Manchester United fans are being consigned to that purgatory.

John in New York writes in (a little before the United comeback):

I’m a Man United fan. I grew up through the 90’s & 2000’s. And while I’ve drifted from being as big a supporter as I was when I was younger as I moved to where I haven’t always had easy access to watch games I still follow them and enjoy the successes when they come such as the FA Cup, the sort of title challenge under Solskjaer in 20/21 & even Ten Haag’s first season when it looked like he was laying the foundations for something. However at this stage I’d almost want them to be relegated to show that there is some justice in the world for how poorly run the club has been for so long. The only argument I could feasibly make against it is that a lot of hard working decent people would lose their jobs but that is even happening anyway. I know it might be heresy to say it as a supporter but the people running the club need to have something shameful that could be laid squarely at their door.

Are there any other supporters who feel the same way?

GOAL! Manchester United 2-1 Ipswich (De Ligt 26)

Goals, goals, goals at OT. It’s a scrappy old set-piece that does it. Fernandes sends in a corner towards the far post, Palmer is forced into a couple of saves but Matthijs de Ligt is the quickest man to the final rebound, blasting in from an unmissable position. All is well at Manchester United (well, not really).

GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 Ipswich (Morsy og 22)

United respond, and it’s Bruno Fernandes to thank. The captain whips in a delicious free-kick from the left, a ball with vicious pace and demanding a finish. Unfortunately for Sam Morsy, he’s the one to oblige, diverting the ball into his own net.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Manchester City (Haaland 12)

Back from injury and immediately in form. Jérémy Doku drifts inside the area from the left and threads a ball along the carpet through several white shirts. Erling Haaland, with far too much space, is on hand for a calm first-time finish into the bottom corner. That’s his 20th league goal of the season.

GOAL! Manchester United 0-1 Ipswich (Philogene 4)

Oh dear. It’s an absolute shocker from the hosts. A long ball over the top should be comfortably dealt with by Patrick Dorgu, running back. Andre Onana advances to the edge of the area to help clean up, but a mix-up sees Dorgu tap the ball away from the keeper. The on-rushing Jaden Philogene ends up with the gift, a simple slot into an empty net. Old Trafford is miserable once again.

Hello Taha. Looks like a fun-filled evening of footy ahead after a very entertaining day of cricket. Quite the rotation at Spurs with Son, Kulu and Spence moved to the bench. I suspect an equally large shake up is imminent in the white ball game

Yes, it’s not looking great for the 2019 world champs.

Here’s today Football Daily, on the misery of the Saints.

Preamble

Hello, hello, hello and welcome to what is a bit of a viewing dream/nightmare. These are some juicy fixtures, so it’s a bit of a shame that they’re all kicking off at the same time. But it also makes for a fun clockwatch.

Here’s what we’ve got, all starting at 7.30pm GMT:

  • Brentford v Everton

  • Manchester United v Ipswich

  • Nottingham Forest v Arsenal

  • Tottenham v Manchester City

It’s Forest-Arsenal that has most of my attention, third v second, a real possibility there of Liverpool extending their lead to 14 points by the end of the night. Will David Moyes’ transformed Everton keep up their unbeaten streak? Is Kieran McKenna going to make things even worse at his old club? Can Spurs beat City for the third time this season? I’ll keep track of it all.

Drop me a line with your hopes, fears, dreams, whatever you fancy. Here’s to goals, goals, goals and goals.
